Friends of Camp Krietenstein

Supporting Growth, Learning, and Development

The Friends of Camp Krietenstein is a not-for-profit organization formed by dedicated Scouters and community members to preserve and enhance the historic Camp Krietenstein in Indiana. Originally a Boy Scout camp for over a century, the property was recently sold to private owners who share a deep commitment to its legacy. Working in collaboration with these owners, the Friends group aims to maintain the camp as a thriving hub for youth development, outdoor education, and community engagement. Their mission includes restoring facilities, expanding programming beyond Scouting, and safeguarding the natural environment, ensuring the camp continues to inspire leadership, teamwork, and personal growth for generations to come, and eventually, to purchase the Camp itself.

Youth Membership in Scouting

Scouting is a worldwide movement dedicated to helping young people develop character, leadership, and practical life skills through outdoor activities, community service, and teamwork. It emphasizes values such as integrity, respect, and responsibility, encouraging youth to learn by doing and to grow into active, engaged citizens.

Within Scouting, there are several age-based groups that provide programs tailored to different stages of development:

  • Cub Scouts – Designed for younger children, typically ages 5–10, focusing on fun, creativity, and learning basic skills through games and simple outdoor adventures.
  • Scouts BSA (or similar programs) – For youth around ages 11–17, offering more challenging activities like camping, hiking, and leadership opportunities, while promoting personal growth and service.
  • Venturing or Explorer programs – For older teens and young adults, often ages 14–20, centered on high-adventure experiences, career exploration, and advanced leadership development.
  • Sea Scouts – A program for teens and young adults interested in boating and water-based activities. Sea Scouting emphasizes seamanship, sailing, navigation, and maritime safety, while fostering teamwork and leadership on the water.

Together, these groups create a progression of experiences that help youth build confidence, learn teamwork, and prepare for life beyond Scouting.

Scouting's Organization

Scouting is organized in a tiered system that ensures strong leadership and support at every level, from national oversight to local community engagement.

  • National Organization
At the top is the national body, which sets overall policies, program standards, and training requirements. It provides resources, manages national events, and ensures that Scouting remains consistent with its mission and values across the country.

  • Regional Level
Below the national organization are regions, which serve as large geographic divisions. Regions help coordinate councils, provide specialized support, and oversee compliance with national standards. They act as a bridge between the national office and local councils.

  • Council Level
Councils are the primary administrative units serving specific areas, often covering multiple cities or counties. Each council manages local programs, training, fundraising, and camps. Councils are led by professional staff and volunteers who work together to support units like packs, troops, crews, and ships.

  • District Level
Within each council are districts, which focus on smaller communities or neighborhoods. Districts provide hands-on support to local units, offering leader training, program planning, and events. They ensure that Scouting is accessible and vibrant at the grassroots level.

This structure allows Scouting to maintain a unified vision while delivering personalized support to youth and volunteers in every community.

Join Us as an Adult Volunteer

Adult volunteers are the backbone of Scouting. They provide the leadership, guidance, and support that make the program possible. From organizing activities and mentoring youth to ensuring safety and fostering personal growth, volunteers create an environment where young people can thrive. Their involvement brings experience, stability, and a sense of community, helping Scouts develop skills, confidence, and values that last a lifetime. Without dedicated adults, Scouting cannot deliver the rich, meaningful experiences that shape future leaders.
